Brendan King grew up on a grain farm outside Humboldt, Saskatchewan, the youngest of five. He was the kid who fixed the furnace, rewired the barn and wasn't afraid of the cellar.

At 24, he was ordained a Catholic priest and spent the next 14 years serving rural parishes across the province. Somewhere along the way, he became the person people called quietly. A farmhouse near Watrous where the doors wouldn't stay shut. A heritage home in Moose Jaw where the piano played itself at 3am. A family in Prince Albert whose kids refused to sleep upstairs.

Brendan always went. He listened, he prayed, and almost every time he noticed something else: a cracked foundation, a draft from a sealed-off room, a crawlspace nobody had opened in forty years. The spiritual and the structural were usually connected.

The official process was slow. A formal request for help could take a year or more to approve, and Brendan watched families wait in homes they were afraid of. In 2009, after a long winter of reflection, he made the hardest decision of his life. He stepped away from the priesthood, earned his home inspector certification, and started Boo-tique out of the back of his pickup truck.

His approach hasn't changed since. Treat every family with respect. Check every room, even that one. Don't leave until the house is right.
